Gavin is one of the film's supporting tertagonists alongside Derek. Academically talented and particularly skilled in STEM subjects, he represents the type of student the Unnamed Boy constantly compares himself against. For most of the story, Gavin pays little attention to the Unnamed Boy, choosing instead to focus on his own interests and friendships. However, he has witnessed several of the Unnamed Boy's emotional outbursts, leaving him uncertain of how to view him. In many ways, Gavin's significance comes less from who he is and more from what he represents: another benchmark the Unnamed Boy believes he must somehow surpass.
