In the hospital flashbacks, we see Mark and Emily at the beginning of their story: young, scared, and in love. Mark vows to stay with Emily through her illness “till death,” while Emily tearfully calls herself a burden and urges him to leave. These early versions can be played by the same actors aged down, but they carry a softer, more hopeful energy that contrasts sharply with their later bitterness and conflict.
