Mrs. Chen is Sarah’s mother, and in a single but pivotal phone call, she hears that, which becomes one of Maya’s deepest emotional blows. We never see her on camera, only hear her voice as she confronts Maya in the aftermath of Sarah’s self-harm, moving quickly from shock to anger to raw grief as she demands to know what Maya “did.” This is a short scene, but it needs an actor who can make the character feel real and lived in with only her voice, and who can portray intense distress without slipping into melodrama. Think of a protective, furious parent who is terrified of losing her child and needs someone to blame.
