'Dumplings'

Casting "Dumplings," a short student film about an immigrant family in the US. Synopsis: One the eve of Lunar New Year, Hannah, a strict Chinese immigrant mother, anxiously prepares a traditional family dinner with her elderly mother while waiting for her absent teenage daughter, Christy, to come home. When Christy arrives late and refuses to help with the cooking, long-suppressed tensions erupt, where the conflict of tradition and modern teenage life.
As arguments escalate over responsibility, identity, and independence, a misunderstanding involving Christy’s classmate Luke pushes Hannah’s patience to a breaking point. Just when emotions are about to hit the top, grandma’s accident brings them all to the kitchen table. Sharing a common need to make more dumplings, this cultural tradition creates a bridge rather than a burden to connect Hannah, Christy, Grandma, and Luke. Although imperfect, the different flavors being wrapped together learn to bring harmony rather than conflict, just like the dumplings they made.

Production states: "Joshua Lee is a current senior at Calvin University, studying Film and Media Production. In his last semester, he hopes to create a short film that tells the story of an immigrant family as he himself is also an immigrant from various countries, mainly South Korea."
