Interested in doing the type of high-impact journalism that can help people and improve their lives?
The Palm Beach Post/PalmBeachPost.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a part-time reporter to cover civic journalism.
This person will join an especially talented newsroom of reporters, videographers and photographers who consistently produce enterprise stories recognized in South Florida and on the state, and sometimes, national level.
Data skills, public records knowledge and government coverage are highly beneficial for this position, but if you need help in these areas, we will work with you until you’re an expert.
This reporter will focus on issues that affect and impact people in Palm Beach County and, if possible, on a broader scale, all of South Florida. This includes government, public services, quality of life and citizens’ rights or responsibilities.
One week they could cover affordability issues, such as trying to find housing in a county that’s getting more expensive. It could be following a family as it visits multiple stores to get the best deals on groceries. It could be talking to people trying to sell their condos because of increasing HOA fees. It could be talking to people who, having paid off their homes, decline getting property insurance because of the expense. They could compare whether prices have increased in things such as roofing, pool-building and landscaping, because of recent deportation crackdowns, and how that affects businesses and homeowners.
This reporter will tell stories through real people, not just statistics. They’ll also talk to officials and experts and use data and public records to bolster their stories. They will take video and pictures to provide complete online coverage.
This reporter will often work with a talented team in the newsroom, sometimes on specific stories, sometimes as part of the newsroom’s coverage of big, breaking stories, such as hurricanes, and other major news stories.
The Palm Beach Post prides itself on a newsroom culture that is collegial and collaborative. We require not only talented reporters and writers but good teammates who support each other and work well across the newsroom with all our teams.
We look for journalists who possess specific traits: intellectual curiosity, a sense of justice/purpose, kindness, passion, and compassion.
