SAMANTHA — Female, 20s–early 40s — LEAD
An accomplished visual artist who has reached a creative and personal crossroads. Intelligent, funny, thoughtful, and self-aware enough to know something is missing from her life, but not yet brave enough to identify what. Engaged to Paul and approaching the conventional life she once assumed she wanted, Samantha accepts an invitation to an artist’s retreat at the former estate of her favorite childhood author. There she unexpectedly reconnects with Ken, her high-school boyfriend, and begins reconsidering the choices that brought her there.
Samantha carries much of the film and requires an actor comfortable with naturalistic dialogue, subtle comedy, long conversational scenes, and quiet emotional shifts. The character’s journey is ultimately less about choosing between two men than rediscovering her own artistic voice and learning to draw inspiration from the life around her.
