Janie is George’s ghost.
She plays two parts in the film. One as the voice in George’s head, guiding him through the story and acting as his guardian angel. The other, as her true self, as shown in flashbacks.
Janie is a free-spirited 20-year-old who sings lead in a Fleetwood Mac cover band when George meets her in 1979. Her hippie lifestyle clashes with George’s Irish-Catholic conservative ideal of the white-picket fence household, but it doesn't matter to her because she is in love.
She wants to live her young life to the fullest, taking advantage of the freedoms of being a new adult, but that opportunity is taken from her when she dies unexpectedly while giving birth, just 22 years old. She lives now only in George’s dreams, a constant reminder of his failure.
