The frantic, meta-theatrical playwright who thinks he's documenting everyone else's story and doesn't realize he's in his own. Nick stalks the woods with a microcassette recorder and a crude donkey mask, convinced he is capturing the marrow of human experience for his one-man show "The Static." He is funny, genuinely, specifically funny, and he sees more than he lets on. He just doesn't know what to do with what he sees. Over the course of the night, Nick loses the recorder, gains the mask permanently fused to his face, meets a woman who is three thousand years old and genuinely listens to him, and learns, for the first time, to be present in a room without documenting it.
