Mother has led an overall average contemporary upscale American life. She has been successful professionally and has been a good wife, mother and member of the community. But like everyone else her exterior belies the more complex story within. Over the course of this film she experiences a compressed existential crisis of incredible intensity. The resolution (when she stops and smiles into the camera) breaks the fourth wall and reveals the fact we are simply watching an actress playing a role.
