Crooks is a proud but bitter man who is crippled from being kicked by a horse, He spends his nights alone reading, occasionally playing horseshoes with the other men. But mostly his only contact with the other men is through work. Only the Boss and Slim have ever been inside his room until Lenny arrives as a friend. Crooks' optimism is piqued by George and Lennie's dream of owning their own little farm. For a brief time, he has hope.
