That charm is the whole point of the role: the unease has to live underneath the warmth, never on top of it. Over the course of the film, his golden surface comes apart, ending in a raw, unguarded fear he's never had to feel before. We're looking for an actor who can hold genuine charisma and quiet menace in the same breath, then let the mask fall completely. Strong emotional range and total control of tone are essential.
