Anne is a women in the 1950s learing to navigate her new life with her boyfriend Anne values making connections with people, and we first see this when she meets an old man named Charles. Most of all, she values a deeper connection with her boyfriend, Charlie. Throughout her conversations with old Charles we see that she stuggles on sharing interest with her boyfriend. Only after Charles finally suggests she share her love of reading does it actually work. She begins to have a deeper connection with her boyfriend and her connection with Charles allows her to set him on the right path.
