The moral center of the play and father of Scout and Jem. A small-town Alabama attorney, widower, and quietly principled man who agrees to defend Tom Robinson. The script describes him as nearly fifty, tall, reserved, civilized, and “quietly impressive.” He should not come across as a grandstanding hero; much of his strength is in his restraint, intelligence, patience, and decency. Possesses considerable authority without seeming authoritarian.
