Returns alone to his childhood home in West Texas. His father's hat still sits on the table. When a bottle of cologne rolls to the floor, he looks back at the doorway with the same fear he carried as a boy. Then he sprays it, breathes it in, and the scent pulls him backward through every memory until he sees his father clearly for the first time. This is a nearly wordless lead performance: the film lives in extreme close-up on his eyes, and the arc from fear to remembrance to peace plays entirely on his face. Seeking an actor who can carry a film in silence, communicate grief, dread, and release through stillness and micro-expression, and sustain long takes in extreme close-up without dialogue. Sides: the cologne and hat sequence, the look back at the doorway.
