### Description
The Denison University Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track professor position of musical theatre beginning in the Fall of 2027.
The successful candidate will contribute to the musical theatre area, collaborating with the other faculty specialist in the Music Theatre program, the other faculty in Theatre, faculty colleagues in Music, and the professional artists of Denison’s Eisner Center for the Performing Arts. The successful candidate will, as part of an annual five-course load,
• direct one musical theatre production each year,
• teach foundational courses for the Music Theatre minor and Theatre major/minor programs, and
• teach other coursework in Theatre commensurate with the candidate’s areas of expertise, which could include, but are not limited to: acting and other performance-oriented courses, directing, theatre-making, choreography/movement, dramaturgy, or performance studies.
A candidate for this role must demonstrate expertise and experience in directing musical theatre productions in professional and/or academic settings and demonstrate experience teaching, motivating, and working collaboratively with undergraduate college students. Demonstrated ability to teach acting or performance-oriented courses to undergraduate students in a liberal arts setting is highly desirable. We seek a candidate whose primary focus is in theatre/musical theatre, but because musical theatre pedagogy is by its nature interdisciplinary, other areas of expertise such as voice or dance would be welcome. An appropriate terminal degree is required at the time of application (depending on the candidate’s professional and academic experience, the M.F.A., D.M.A., or Ph.D. in a variety of subfields in the performing arts may be appropriate).
The program in Theatre at Denison has seven full-time faculty positions—two of which are devoted to musical theatre—and three full-time teaching staff artists in the design subfields, who collaborate with the professional artistic staff of Denison’s Eisner Center for the Performing Arts on the production of six mainstage theatre projects each year; two of these productions are devoted to the lab experiences of the Music Theatre area, in collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Music. The program in Theatre typically has 50-60 majors and minors in a multidisciplinary B.A. major in Theatre, a minor in Theatre, and a minor in Music Theatre.
Denison University is a diverse, highly selective, residential liberal arts college enrolling approximately 2,400 students from across the nation and around the world. We emphasize building a supportive environment so that every student has the opportunity to succeed. We are located thirty miles from Columbus, Ohio, the state capital, which hosts many cultural and artistic opportunities.
