HOUSTON GRAND OPERAAUDITIONING ACTORSFOR NON-SINGING PRINCIPAL ROLES IN SHOW BOATAuditions: Saturday, October 3, 2026

The Houston Grand Opera Association (HGO) announces auditions for actors for

principal non-singing roles in HGO’s Spring 2027 production of the Kern/Hammerstein II

classic Show Boat. The production directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by

HGO’s Music Director Emeritus Patrick Summers celebrates the centennial of this

landmark musical theater masterpiece.

Set aboard the floating theater Cotton Blossom, Show Boat traces the intertwined lives of

performers navigating decades of love and loss in a story shaped by racial injustice during

the era of segregation.

Auditions will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at the Wortham Theater Center, 510

Preston Street, Houston, TX 77002. Candidates must register in advance to audition.

All interested candidates should have FULL AVAILABILITY to be called up to 30 hours per

week during the 8-week production period of March 22 through May 16, 2027. Actors who are

contracted will receive scale wages on a weekly basis of at least $1,450 US per week, depending

on the role.

ROLES TO BE AUDITIONED:Parthy Ann Hawks – Middle to older age Female, non-Black character. Stoic and moralistic, sharp tongued New

England wife of a Louisiana showman. Dislikes show business.

Steve Baker / Max – Middle age Male, non-Black character. Debonaire. Conventionally handsome leading man

type.

Pete / Emcee – Middle age Male, non-Black character. A rough engineer, river rat. Surly personality.

Sheriff Vallon / Bartender – Middle to older age Male, non-Black character. Old style good ol’ boy sheriff.

Mrs. O’Brien – Middle to older age Female, non-Black character. Irish immigrant, landlady to boarders to whom

she rents rooms in her Chicago house.

Adult performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, and abilities are welcome to submit.

Audition times will be assigned and sides to prepare for the audition will

be distributed upon registration.
