ARTHUR embodies the ancient, outdated vendor solution whose sole selling point is "experience," which he believes trumps modern conveniences. He is stubbornly resistant to progress, dismissing contemporary systems as mere "gizmos" or "click-clacks". The comedy relies heavily on physical and auditory elements: he is hard of hearing, forcing Maya to shout her frustration, and he is constantly and loudly sucking on a hard candy. The actor must be adept at broad, physical comedy, conveying a dated formality (plaid blazer, ascot) while performing highly awkward, specific actions, such as attempting to pay with a checkbook or a roll of dollar coins and giving a slow, unconvincing wink.
