Richard is Maya’s (our lead's) father: distinguished, with kind eyes and an easy warmth; he’s the type of dad who grills, hosts, and pays attention more than he talks; he loves his daughter fiercely and fully accepts her spiritual/“witchy” life, but he’s quietly protective and wants to be sure her husband can truly handle the world she lives in; on the surface, he’s relaxed and good-humored; he's busy giving toasts, making gentle jokes, pulling Jake aside for a calm, honest talk; underneath, he’s observant and emotionally intelligent, clocking the slight shifts in body language and tone; when things go wrong later in the story, Richard is one of the first safe harbors: he offers practical support, a place to land, and a listening ear, even as he’s clearly worried.
