Mary is the wife of Sheriff Thomas Kirby; she and Thomas have been having issue sint heir marriage over the past year. Thomas disappeared for a weekend a year before the film takes place. Mary has not forgiven Thomas for this, and since he will not disclose what he did, Mary is very distrustful of Thomas. Mary is a strong-willed woman; she is strong in her faith and in her resolution, and she refuses to give Thomas any resolution till he admits what he did that weekend. And through the events that Thomas has to deal with, it pulls them further apart, causing Mary to have to rely on her faith and her will to find out the truth.
