Maw is Rip's grandmother and the woman who raised him — a crossword-and-Gin-Rummy fixture of the nursing home who has worked since she was nine years old and never once asked anybody for a thing. She's got a mouth on her, and will tell you exactly what she thinks in the fewest words it takes. Affection makes her squirm, so she bats it away with a joke. She raised a boy somebody else abandoned, outlasted every job that used her up, and still greets you like you've done her a favor by walking in the door. Underneath the spunk is the thing Rip only names onstage: she took her beatings standing up.
